Welcome to the I Know This Music! Course and Test

This test is all about listening and enjoying well-known and loved pieces of piano music. It is also about gaining some basic knowledge about the different styles and periods within the classical music tradition. 


The ability to recognize the music style is hard to explain. Music lovers are usually able to recognize the style or a period in which certain piece was composed. Yet, if you ask them HOW they do it, you may not get a clear answer. It is a bit like you might recognize that a certain person is a relative of yours even when you see him/her for the first time.


Your ability to determine the style of a classical piece will develop overtime. In order for this to happen, it is important to have some idea about the basic features of the different styles, and to listen to a number of pieces written in these styles.


So here there are the three most distinct styles within the classical tradition:


The Baroque   The Classicism  The Romanticism

Now click on a level below and listen to the pieces. You don't need to listen to all of them at once, but make sure that you hear each piece several times and you become familiar with it. Also, take note of the name of its composer, and the style and historic period to which the composer belongs.
